Damon was not enthusiastic about his current location, nor the purpose behind it. If he didn't love Elena so much, he never would have been there in the first place, but she had begged him to take her place, so what could he do? Sacrificing himself for the greater good was becoming somewhat of a habit for him of late, and it was getting harder each time. Today had to be one of the worst things he had faced in all his years, in the name of love. He stood at the center of the town square, early on a Saturday morning, waiting for Caroline Forbes to show up for a shopping date.
Yes, that's right. A shopping date with Caroline. You see, Spring Fling was coming up at the high school, and everyone knew Caroline was the event planner in town. Well, in school at least. She was pretty good at it, but Damon couldn't help but look at it in a different light. The light that, she was basically too much of a busy body to not be involved in everything. Even things to do with Damon, she had to stick her nose in, things that were none of her business. It was highly irritating, but he put up with if for Elena's sake. The same way he put up with the rest of her friends and family. He was beginning to think himself a pushover, but it was too late to go back now.
Elena had been the one who was supposed to help shop for supplies and decorations for the event, but she had other things to do today, so had charmed Damon into going instead. He still didn't have a clue why he had said yes, and he wasn't sure Caroline would have been too pleased, either. Unless she hadn't been told yet. He wouldn't put it past Elena to just not say anything and let them thrash it out between themselves when Caroline got an unpleasant surprise. She wasn't there yet though, since Damon had arrived a little earlier than he was meant to, to give himself time to mentally prepare for a torturous morning. Next thing, he'd be roped in to helping decorate the damn school, as well. He folded his arms across his chest defensively, and continued to scan the area for signs of Barbie.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP The Spring Fling was soon approaching and as usual Caroline had taken it upon herself to be put in charge and plan every single detail of the event that was to take place. Some people wondered why the blonde would even volunteer and put so much of her time in planning a school dance. Didn’t she have better things to do? Especially now that she was a vampire? But Caroline didn’t see it that way. The girl liked to hold on to the human aspects of her life as much as possible. Although she would live forever as a bloodsucking creature, she still enjoyed school dances, cheerleading, and planning events. What was it about these humanly things Caroline found appealing? Maybe it was the normalcy of them all. Normalcy that didn’t involve curses, cures, sacrifices, the killing of 12 hybrids, drowning the mayor…
At that thought Caroline stopped thinking on that. Today was supposed to be normal, it was supposed to be productive. And Caroline couldn’t be at her most productive state if her mind was somewhere else the whole time. Today she and Elena were going out to shop for the decorations. They needed colorful streamers, beautiful flowers, and other spring-like decorations to put about the gym and give it an elegant and natural feel. And this dance had to be perfect! Spring was about new beginnings, hope, that even after the harsh winter things still live. Symbolically it connected with the girl and the current predicament they had all been put through. And it gave hope that after everything, they would still go on and never give up. That maybe good things may happen to them one day! That something for once may actually go their way and no one would have to suffer.
Finally she arrived at the town square and stopped in place immediately, seeing who it was waiting where Elena was not found. Finally it occurred to her to check her phone where she found a text from Elena… that the girl had other things to do and sent Damon. Seriously! What was this supposed to be? Bonding time? Couldn’t Elena have found another time to try and get them to bond or something? Now she had a dance to plan and she didn’t want to deal with Damon in the midst of her planning. But she couldn’t do it all alone, she gave a defeated and irritated sigh putting her phone back away and walking to the older Salvatore Brother. “Hey Damon. Okay, so a few grounds rules in order to make this as painless for the both of us. I need serious opinions, no snarky comments, no distractions. I have a dance to plan and I intend on actually getting things done. Understood?” She asked as Caroline was already getting into her control-freak ways that always happened whenever she was put in charge of an event and things changed.

Right on cue, the blonde vampire appeared on th scene, looking a tad confused as she checked her phone. So she hadn't expected him, as he'd thought. He smirked, feeling like he had gotten one up over her already. Damon waited patiently as she barged over to him and laid out the rules immediately, telling him she needed serious opinions and help today. She was obviously living on another planet, and Planet Caroline was not somewhere Damon wanted to spend his time. What did he care about a stupid school dance? Sure, he had been to a few, but that was purely on duty, to stop any assholes of the day showing up and going on a killing spree. It wasn't like he actually enjoyed them....
Giving her an ingenuine half smile, his eyes flashed at Caroline, testily. "And here I thought we could get our nails done, first," he retorted. "Maybe we could even shop for puppies later!" Chewing on his bottom lip, he considered just ditching her right there, and leaving her to do this on her own. Elena would be furious with him. He swallowed hard, lips pursed, and grabbed Caroline's arm, pulling her towards the shops. "Let's just get this over with, okay? I didn't exactly volunteer to be your lackey for the day." He didn't want to snap, but the day just looked grim from every angle, at the moment.
He let Caroline go once they were across he road, and indicated to the shops, not having a clue where they were meant to be going. He wasn't a qualified party planner, unfortunately, and the thought of getting drunk at the Grill was sounding more and more appealing as the excrutiatingly long seconds ticked on. "Where to first? And please don't tell me you were planning on fitting in dress shopping or something, I may just have to stake myself right here." All of this, and they hadn't even entered a single shop yet. It would take a miracle to turn Damon's mood around at this rate, but he stubbornly told himself to stay. He'd make Elena pay for this later. She owed him big time.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Caroline knew exactly who it was who she was talking to and the hopes of him following any of these rules or even being slightly tolerable was very slim. Okay, maybe Damon wasn’t as bad as Caroline usually made him out to be. But he was irritating! And arrogant! And sort of an ass at times. Not to mention their past wasn’t exactly the most delightful… nor did he ever apologize for what he did either. But why would he? She was human back then and he probably just found it a natural part of life. But it seemed everyone had forgotten about that, it was put behind them upon Damon’s so called redemption. But to be fair he did save Caroline’s life once or twice. Sure the only reason he did so was for Elena’s sake, but it still did kind of mean something. And despite how deep Damon got under Caroline’s skin… she would save his life as well if a situation ever called for it.
But those nice and sweet thoughts of saving his life and how he wasn’t even too bad were immediately lost as words came out of his mouth. “Aw, Damon. I didn’t realize you wanted to get your nails done. If that is really such a problem we can go right now.” she began with a fake smile and a mockingly sweet tone. “Oh definitely, you could use a puppy. It may actually be your only friend.” Caroline retorted with a smirk. But since when were these types of comment not common between the two of them? It seemed as if it was Damon’s goal to irritate her to no end so she merely returned the favor. Although the blonde did wonder how long the two of them could last without any sort of snarky comments exchanged.
It would have been a lie if Caroline had said Damon didn’t catch her off guard when grabbing her arm and pulling her slightly towards the shops. Well maybe if he was in a hurry to get this over with. “Fine by me, let’s just make this quick because I didn’t ask for your help either. But unfortunately Elena bailed and she left me with you so I guess we both need to get over it. I swear, she probably chose you as a replacement in hopes of bonding time between us.” Caroline said as a small chuckle managed to escape at the thought of the last part. Caroline and Damon bonding!. It was something that could never happen. After all, both made it clear that they only tolerated the other for Elena’s sake. But Caroline wasn’t going to befriend him for Elena’s sake. Any sort of friendship between the two would require an apology from him… and him getting over his pride and making the first move of a truce as well.
“First we need some nice colored streamers… I was thinking like a green and blue type theme with them. Those seem to be spring-like colors.” She said as she began to walk towards one of the stores deciding to make the best of things until everything got handled. “As for the dress, well I was planning on it. But I can save that for a later date, just for your sake because that is the merciful person I am.” she teased slightly before opening the door to one store and holding it open while she waited for him to follow behind her. This would certainly prove to be an interesting day… and Elena so owed her for this.

A puppy as his only friend. Ha. Yeah, right. He'd sooner eat a puppy than befriend it. Well, that wasn't actually true, but it's what he would have told her if he was in the mood to send back a witty retort. As it was, he didn't want to dignify the comment with a response, so he kept his mouth shut and went for a disgruntled look, instead. He nearly choked, though, at the mention of he and Caroline bonding. Brows furrowing in disbelief, he folded his arms over his chest. "I think we got our bonding out of the way in the early stages of our.... relationship, didn't we," he quipped, referring to her time with him when she was still human. He enjoyed poking at sensitive issues.
He followed her to the nearest store and entered behind her as she described her ideas for colour schemes. He couldn't have cared less if she'd said she wanted to paint the walls with blood and hang dead bodies around the hall instead of streamers. He couldn't have been any less interested if he tried. He wanted to be less interested. Less interested to the point where he didn't feel obliged to play along. As if Elena had seen this as a bonding session for the pair. She wasn't that naive. Unless becoming a vampire had gone to her head and made her lose the plot. The last thing Damon wanted to do was bond with Caroline. Or Bonnie. Or Jeremy. Or anyone other than the bottle of whiskey waiting for him at home. He had allowed someone in once, gotten close, had a real friend, and Ric had gone and died on him. No way was that happening again.
He glanced around the store without really knowing what he was looking for. If she wanted green and blue, then by all means, she could have it. "Nice colour choice," he piped up. "Did you use my eyes for inspiration?" He batted his eyelashes at her, pale blue orbs flashing with devilment. "How about just decorating the hall with home made daisy chains," he suggested sarcastically. "I will personally drop you off at the nearest meadow so you can spend a week picking and making them." He smirked to himself, thinking it would be lovely to abandon her in a field somewhere far away for a week. It would have been more fun if she were still human. As it was, she could proably run back to Mystic Falls in under an hour and spoil his fun.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE YOUR EYESif ten million fireflies lit upTHE WORLD AS I FELL ASLEEP Witty Damon remarks was an aspect of every conversation involving the older Salvatore. As was remarks that went way too far and hit a very sensitive nerve. Just as Damon just did. Merely mentioning the past the two of them were once involved in. It caused Caroline’s stomach to twist as some of the memories flashed in her mind for a few moments. Of how Damon had compelled her to do his bidding, manipulated her, fed on her. How she would be terrified of him and yet at the same time not be able to leave. Not to mention how much damage he had inflicted on her self-esteem. It was one of the darkest moments in her life to look back on, something that had haunted her. And yet it seemed like everyone around her forgot about it. “Bonding? Is that what it’s called now? I was thinking something more along the lines of… hmm… cruelty?” she said raising her eyebrows with some coldness in her tone but trying her best to give a smirk. Trying to keep up an act of confidence to hide how that comment had cut her in some way.
But honestly, the talk of their complicated and dark past was not really a matter of discussion at a time like this. A time when they were out in public trying to get some shopping done in attempts to plan the spring dance. This was the exact distraction that Caroline had been trying to avoid. The whole productivity factor of this trip was going to be considerably slowed down because of the company she was forced to keep. It was best if they both just tried to grin and bear it. Something that was probably much easier said than done, as most things involving the toleration of Damon Salvatore.
Caroline couldn’t help but chuckle as she shook her head at his comment. “Yes Damon, clearly I based the theme of our school dance after your eyes. You caught me red-handed. My obsession for your eyes just can no longer be kept hidden inside. Such a relief you caught on to it.” The sarcasm clear in her voice, although it weirdly wasn’t a cold type of sarcasm. It could actually be seen as kind of playful in a way. Although if things kept going this way soon Care would become a bit overwhelmed with the stress of planning and the control-freak inside of her would come out. Making it very hard to laugh or have fun until things were handled and in place.
Then came his sarcasm, which Caroline might have taken seriously if it was not Damon Salvatore giving her this suggestion. Although the part of him dropping her off and abandoning her at some meadow for a week exposed the joke. She rolled her eyes as she walked to one of the aisles and began to look through the many shades of blue streamers. “Thanks for the offer, but I am sure that daisy embroidery would be better for you. You need some happy surroundings to give you some sort of positivity.” Care said keeping a straight face as she observed each color, trying to find the best one.
